Douglas Hogue Farrier Service

What is a farrier?

Under ideal conditions, the horses hoof is perfect protection for the sensitive structures contained within.  While the earths surface of the hoof is worn away, it is being renewed from above at the coronary band maintaining the ideal length and angle. Domestication of the horse has destroyed ideal conditions and now the horse requires hoof care.  The preparation and application of this falls within the realm of the farrier and is considered both a science and an art.
Farriery requires; from the anatomical standpoint, a knowledge of the construction of the foot and leg; from the physiological standpoint, relative guidance and treatment and from surgery acquaintance of the proper methods of relief of foot ailments.  The hoof must be prepared to insure correct position of the limb, proper motion and secure fitting of the shoe.
There are many reasons for the necessity of shoes.  Shoes serve to protect excessive wear of the hoof, and in some measure the sensitive structures within the hoof. A shoe can reduce slipping, improve faulty gates and relieve various ailments.  The foot is not just the end of the leg, but a living and very complicated portion of the limb.  The form of the shoe and preparation of the foot requires endless variation, depending upon the condition of the hoof, the confirmation of the horse and the function to which the horse is intended.
Only when the horse is properly shod can he or she do their best.  Any neglect or incompetence results in second rate performance or perhaps injury to the hoof and in worst case scenario, loss of the animals service.
In summary, the farrier must be learned in the structure and function of the limb and foot, must possess physical and mental prowess, must be experienced and possess common sense.
